Guenter Butschek says environment & safety need to be top priority for automobile industry

15 per cent of the pollution in 2017 was contributed by the auto industry.

At a recent event in Mumbai, Guenter Butschek, global CEO, Tata Motors, spoke to his audience about mobility solutions and how the auto industry is at a crossroads. While he says that India is the hub of start up culture, which he found extremely encouraging, Butschek suggests that engineers in the coming years will have to face a whole new set of challenges; with environment and safety being at the forefront.

“Electric cars may be the way forward. In November 2017, pollution reached an all-time high. Fifteen per cent of it is contributed by the auto industry. But we have an obligation to do something about it.” He says that while these are fundamental challenges for mobility solutions, the time has already come to address them. “Every four minutes, there is a fatality in traffic related incidents. There are a number of contributing factors. We also need to build a better ecosystem,” Butschek said.
