As the high-stakes drama of the FIFA World Cup 2026 reaches a fever pitch, a new soccer icon is stealing the spotlight. But guess what? He has four legs and his name is Ronaldo. No, we are not talking about the Portuguese legend but an adorable 6-year-old Chiweenie breed dog known for his excellent goal-saving talent, remarkable agility, and, of course, a profound love for football. While the tournament spotlight remains firmly on the world's best players, this canine goalkeeper has been rightfully winning hearts across social media.

A backyard game changed everything

Ronaldo, who is a mix between a chihuahua and a dachshund, belongs to Candida Craveiro and her husband, Antonio, from Bucks County in Pennsylvania, reported People magazine. They brought him home in February 2020. Their daughter Stephanie Craveiro Katzman and her husband Sam look after Ronaldo’s social media presence and maintain his goalkeeper training. At present, the cute animal has 20.9k followers on Instagram.

The Craveiro-Katzman family learnt Ronaldo’s love for football at a family barbecue when the dog dropped and practically ignored his favourite chorizo sausage to chase after a ball, reported CBC. Not long after, the Chiweenie developed a passion for soccer balls, rolling around the backyard during family gatherings.

Goalkeeping over scoring

Ronaldo’s owners call him the ‘greatest goalkeeper on 4 legs’, because, instead of simply chasing after the ball, he charges into games to stop every shot he can. As per Stephanie, every time someone barely touches the ball with their foot, Ronaldo springs into action almost immediately, running straight towards the ball.

Initially, the family bought a mini goalpost for Ronaldo and tried teaching him how to score, much like his namesake, Cristiano Ronaldo. But the adorable furry was more interested in catching the ball with his mouth than kicking it. ‘He showed us he preferred stopping shots and being a goalkeeper,’ recalled Katzman.

The family behind football-loving dog

Ronaldo’s love for football stems from his family itself, as everyone in the Craveiro family is a die-hard football fan, especially when it comes to supporting Portugal. ‘Since we always are playing in the backyard and enjoy the game so much, Ronaldo just always had it around him and wanted to be a part of the fun,’ shared Katzman.

Now, Ronaldo plays with the ball every day, while his family continues to film his quirky antics and goalkeeper training sessions about once a week and posts them on Ronaldo’s official Instagram handle, ronaldothefootballdog. His bio read, ‘I love stomach scratchies & making saves.’ Animal lover or football freak, you ought to check the posts as chances are they will certainly leave you gushing.
