'GoPro Hero 7 Black' review: Gimbal-like stabilisation called 'HyperSmooth' is the highlight

GoPro is ubiquitous when it comes to action cameras. They’ve even inspired a swarm of clones and thousands of third-party accessories that use the trademark 3-prong mount. Their latest and top-of-the-line offering is the Hero 7 Black. It’s waterproof up to 33 feet without a case, includes a colour touchscreen, voice control (start/stop recording, capture photos), app control, live streaming, 4K video, vertical/portrait video, GPS, time lapse, time warp (a stabilised hyperlapse), 8x slow motion and 12MP stills with HDR.
But the highlight of the Hero 7 Black has to be the new gimbal-like stabilisation (dubbed HyperSmooth). Honestly, we thought it was just marketing speak until we tried it. This is a new type of electronic image stabilisation (EIS) that analyses the scene, applies rolling shutter correction and then uses the gyro sensors in the camera to apply counter shake in real time. Long story short, you can run with the Hero 7 Black in your hand, strap it on your chest or mount it on a bicycle handlebar, the resulting video does magically look like it was captured using a 3-axis gimbal.
There are two cheaper versions of the Hero 7 (White and Silver) but neither offers the HyperSmooth stabilisation. You can also switch modes using voice, use the touchscreen or just get the app for the full experience, a remote viewfinder, instant phone transfer/sharing and complete remote control. Apart from the cool HyperSmooth feature, the Hero 7 Black also offers vastly improved image quality and better low-light capture. Make sure you have the correct type of fast micro SD card for it (GoPro’s website has a list of supported types). This camera is proof that GoPro is still the king of action cameras.
