Google now lets you remove personal info and deepfakes from Search in a few clicks, as India tightens AI rules

Google is responding to new government regulations on AI-generated material. These updates offer victims a direct way to report harmful content from Search results.

Google is enhancing its Search tools in India
As India rolls out stricter regulations around AI-generated content and deepfakes, Google is stepping up with new tools that give users more control over what shows up about them online. The company has announced updates to Search that make it simpler to request the removal of explicit images and sensitive personal information, a move aimed at tackling digital abuse and manipulated content.

The update comes at a time when the government is pushing for faster takedowns and mandatory labelling of AI-generated material. Google says its refreshed removal process is designed to help victims report harmful content directly from Search results, without having to jump through multiple hoops.

How the new removal system works

Users can now flag explicit or intimate images straight from Google Search by tapping the three-dot menu next to a result and selecting “Remove result.” From there, Google asks for the reason, including options for non-consensual or sexually explicit content.

One key improvement is that people can now report multiple images in a single request. Earlier, each link had to be submitted separately. Requests can also be tracked through Google’s “Results about you” hub, which shows the status of submissions and sends updates when action is taken.

Once a removal is approved, users can enable an additional filter that helps prevent similar explicit results from resurfacing in future searches tied to their name. This is particularly useful in cases involving AI-generated deepfakes, where altered content often reappears in different forms.

More protection for sensitive personal data

Beyond explicit images, Google is expanding removal options to cover details like phone numbers, home addresses and government ID information. The system can also alert users if new instances of such data appear online, allowing quicker action.

That said, Google clarifies that these changes only affect Search results. The original content will still remain on the hosting website unless that platform removes it separately.

Google says the updated safety tools are rolling out gradually across multiple countries, including India. As AI regulation tightens locally and globally, this move signals a broader push by tech platforms to offer faster, more accessible ways for users to protect their digital identity.
