As the longest day of the year, the solstice also marks the official start of the summer season.

Google Doodle Marks Summer Solstice, Longest Day Of Year

Google, today, marked the start of the summer with a doodle dedicated to the 2019 summer solstice. This period marks the longest days and shortest nights. The duration of daytime continues to decrease as the summer progresses after solstice. The date, however, varies depending on the climate, culture and tradition. When the Northern Hemisphere sees summer, the Southern Hemisphere sees winter, and vice versa.

The only reason why summer solstice is the longest day of the year is because of the tilt of the Earth's axis is inclined towards the sun. This makes the sun the highest point of elevation between June 20 and June 22 each year. However, in the Southern hemisphere, people witness the shortest day of the year and it marks the official beginning of winter in the region.

The solstice also encourages people to come out and enjoy the warm weather. Summer solstice celebrations at the Stonehenge in United Kingdom are most-popular. Millions of people travel to the mysterious and ancient monument to watch the sunrise and connect with nature during winter and summer.
