As of now, Google has extended Chrome support for Windows 7 for another six months.
Google said in an announcement that it has extended Google Chrome support for Windows 7 for six months, with 21% of organizations that were running the old operating system yet to migrate to Windows 10.
“After assessing the current situation, and based on feedback from our valued enterprise customers, Chrome is extending our support for Windows 7 until at least January 15, 2022,” Google said in a blog post.
Microsoft said earlier this year that the Windows 7 lifecycle would come to an end in January. However, enterprise clients who’d pushed upgrading to the end of the financial year could not complete migrating to Windows 10 due to the outbreak of Covid-19 in March 2020.
“Microsoft will not be providing technical support for any issues, software updates, security updates or fixes for Windows 7 post-January 14,” the company had said at the time.
Other companies, whose wares run on Windows 7, such as Google, said that it would extend support for its Chrome browser on the older operating system for a minimum of 18 months from Microsoft’s End of Life date - July 15, 2021.
According to a study by market research firm Kantar, commissioned by Google Chrome Enterprise, as of Q2 2020, 21% of organizations were yet to migrate to Windows 10. With most offices shuttered due to Covid-19 related lockdowns, it is unlikely that more companies would’ve migrated to Windows 10 in the months following the outbreak of the pandemic.

As of now, Google has extended Chrome support for Windows 7 for another six months. “With this extension of support, enterprises with their upgrades still in progress can rest assured that their users remaining on Windows 7 will continue to benefit from Chrome’s security and productivity benefits,” Google said in a blog post.
“IT teams can also take advantage of Chrome’s existing enterprise capabilities and future roadmap, including our continued investment in cloud management, enterprise security capabilities, and our plans to integrate more closely with the broader ecosystem across the operating system versions,” it added.

Technology trends make it clear that in a post Covid world, more content will be watched and consumed on mobile devices, be it in form of video conferencing for a meeting, an online class, or Video for entertainment. Even before the pandemic, video occupied over 70% of the content transmitted over the mobile network.
This will rise exponentially in the post Covid world and will overburden mobile networks which are not designed to handle such load. To prevent network congestion and improve user experience, the communication companies will use “Shared” spectrum.
