Dilip Sardesai: Google doodle fetes Indian cricket's Renaissance Man on 78th birth anniversary
Google honoured 'one of the best batsmen ever to play cricket' Dilip Sardesai on his 78th birth anniversary with a unique GIF.

The search engine giant unveiled the doodle, featuring Sardesai hitting the spinning ball with full force.

Dilip Sardesai

The legendary batsman of India was born in Goa, which doesn't have any approved Test cricket grounds for national matches. The cricketer was known to hone his skills, and hit every spin ball with effectiveness.

In a span of 11 years, the sportsman scored 2,001 runs between 1961 and 1972. He was titled the 'Renaissance Man of Indian cricket' as he played 30 Test matches for the country.

The Google website remembered Sardesai's greatest feat when 'he helped defeat the mighty West Indies side in their own backyard in 1971'. "The Indian team had lost to Barbados and struggled against Guyana, but Sardesai became a national hero in India for his 642 runs in the series, including a score of 212 in the Test match at Kingston, Jamaica," added the website.

The cricketer also boosted his team's spirits by coining the term 'Popatwadi attack' (to poke fun at opponents) for the match.

“I was told he was terrific against spin,” wrote his son, journalist Rajdeep Sardesai. “He wasn’t the greatest fielder but he was always someone who was ready for a fight.” Today’s animated Doodle depicts Sardesai, whom West Indian fans nicknamed "Sardee-man," showing his skill at the crease as he sends a ball flying.
