Google honours Lachhu Maharaj on 74th birth anniversary with a doodle
Google today celebrates eminent tabla player Lachhu Maharaj's birth anniversary, with a doodle.
Lachhu Maharaj, also known as Lakshmi Narayan Singh, was born on October 16, 1944 in Banaras to a family of musicians.
He was trained under his father Vasudev Maharaj. While training under the tutelage of his father, he put his skills to test and started performing from an early age.
He belonged to the Banaras gharana and besides playing in classical concerts, he also played tabla for several films.
He was awarded the 1957 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the highest award for performing artists, conferred by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy for Music, Dance and Drama.
He was nominated for the Padma Shri, but refused to accept the award. He felt the appreciation of his audience was enough.
The doodle has been designed by guest artist Sajid Shaikh and has Lachhu Maharaj drawn with the Google logo's primary colours. Lachhu Maharaj is seen on the Google Doodle playing the tabla for his audience, with a grin on his face and a look of contentment in his eyes.
Lacchu Maharaj passed away in July 2016 in Varanasi at the age of 72, after a prolonged illness.
