Google’s animated doodle on sign language creator Charles-Michel de l'Epee’s birth anniversary
On his 306th anniversary today, Google is using an animated doodle to honour Charles-Michel de l'Epee.

He was an educator and founded the first public school for the hearing-impaired in France.

Born in Versailles in 1712, he was the son of an architect who studied theology and law before beginning to focus on charity work in Paris. It is during this time that he met two young deaf sisters who lived in the slums of Paris and communicated through sign language. This inspired him to change countless lives at a time when many deaf people were discriminated against.

He devoted his life to developing the world's first sign alphabet for the deaf and is known as the 'Father of the Deaf'.

He is also credited with creating a systematic method of teaching the hearing-impaired.

Dispelling the misconception that people with impaired hearing were incapable of learning, Épée developed a visual method that became the blueprint for the teaching of the deaf and that changed countless lives at a time when many deaf people were discriminated against.

The French National Assembly recognised him as a 'Benefactor of Humanity' and asserted the rights of deaf people under France’s Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen.

Épée passed away at the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789.
