Godrej Appliances business head plans a virtual musical evening once a month with friends

Kamal Nandi has upgraded his online skills for work and socialising with friends & family.

Kamal Nandi is staying connected in the lockdown.
In pre-Corona times, one of Kamal Nandi’s favourite things to do on the weekend was to relax with a beverage and hang out with his friends. That’s not changed during the lockdown, although hanging out has now been replaced with logging on.

“Our need to stay connected with fellow human beings is so innate. We are exploring all means to stay in touch with our friends, colleagues and loved ones, and support each other and keep our spirits high,” says Nandi, business head, Godrej Appliances.

“Earlier, we had this monthly tradition of family and friends coming together for a musical evening at my place. We have managed that with online sessions as well.”

Locked in and logged on

When it comes to work, Nandi’s setup at his Mumbai home helps him set the tone. It’s all about function and nature. “Fortunately for me, I live in a very green colony and am blessed with the view of a grassy garden with old trees and young plants,” he says.

And while he enjoys the bonus family time (and spending time with Bozo, his pet dog), Nandi says he misses the spontaneity of the workplace. “These work conversations would often kickstart a new idea or the insights I could observe for myself in my travels as well,” says Nandi.

But on a positive note, he’s upskil led. “Thanks to the endless video calls, I am now an expert on MS Teams, which was relatively new to me before the lockdown,” he laughs.

Yash Dongre Business head at House of Anita Dongre

“I have fine-tuned my baking skills. Although my wife Benaisha and I aren’t vegan, the rest of the house is. So, during the lockdown, vegan baking took centrestage. Benaisha makes the best chocolate mousse cake. It’s made with dates, almond flour and coconut milk — it’s a huge hit. I find baking therapeutic. It’s a precise activity where the outcome is as perfect as the work that goes into it. If you follow the instructions, the end result is good. I love that.”

It’s been great to purge myself of the mental and physical baggage I’d been carrying.”
