Now, 33 years after Umbartha released, Karnad is all set to make a return to Marathi cinema with director Shiv Kadam’s Sargam. Talking about the film, the Cappuccino director, said, “As a writer, I look up to Mr Karnad and during my years as a student of theatre, I had adapted his play Nagamandala for my final year direction project. When I wrote this particular role, I felt only he can do justice to it and I got in touch with him.”

Karnad plays the role of a nomad who’s given up the pleasures of life and meets the protagonist while roaming in the jungle, in this coming of age love story. According to Kadam, when he contacted Karnad for the role, he agreed even without hearing the story. And when Kadam finally narrated the script to him, he loved the story and his role as well. “Mr Karnad was the first person we finalised, even before the protagonists. The search for other actors is on,” said Kadam.
