When a budding 13-year-old taught Pullela Gopichand a lesson!
Pullela Gopichand is probably one of the most successful coaches in the country, but sometimes, even the best of teachers becomes the student. Speaking at an event in Mumbai recently, Gopichand recalled one of the best lessons he learnt from a 13-year-old student.

“I was training this young girl, and I threw a shuttle at her, expecting her to catch it and throw it back,” the chief national coach for the Indian badminton team said.

“She missed it. Again and again. I walked off after many attempts, thinking that I have 30 other children to concentrate on. After class, she came up to me and said, ‘Sir, teach me how to catch’. Even today when I think about it, I get teary. I learnt that sometimes the basics that are taken for granted need to be taught as well.”

The rift between the Indian chief national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand and doubles ace Jwala Gutta is well-known.

It all began in 2015, when Gutta said that Gopichand, who was coaching her, denied her “rightful acknowledgment” of her performance.

She also felt a general lack of support and funds. While Gopichand did not retaliate then, he recently spoke about their feud.

“I have forwarded names for funding to the sports ministry whenever required.

Apart from that, what more can we do? I do not know why she goes on maligning me everywhere.”

Earlier this year as well, Gutta said that Gopichand had “let her down”.

Last month, the Pakistani batsman accused his team’s coach of verbally abusing him at the National Cricket Academy.

“I accept my fi tness isn’t up to the mark... but Mickey said I shouldn’t even have come to the NCA, and should be playing club cricket instead.

When the head coach is allowed to swear at someone, that is unacceptable,” he said.

Arthur, however responded to Akmal’s allegations with a scathing response — “Akmal cannot expect that the support staff, who are for contracted players, are at his beck and call.”

Clearly there is bad blood between them.

It remained on the team’s website till James re-joined in 2014.

Jump to 2017 and now it’s James who has been embroiled in a series of public battles with the team’s owners, including Gilbert.

The reason is that he wants them to spend more money on quality players as the team looks to become champions again.

Looks like there is no love lost here as the fi ght is reloaded for the duo.
