LOS ANGELES: Actor Gerard Butler's " London Has Fallen", which was originally slated to release on October 2 this year, will now hit theatres in 2016.

The release of the sequel to 2013's " Olympus Has Fallen" has been pushed to January 22, said the Hollywood Reporter.

The earlier release date would have seen the action thriller get competition from "The Martian" and "The Walk".

Butler will reprise his role as the former Special Forces soldier Mike Banning, who thwarts a plot to assassinate world leaders in London.

Directed by Babak Najafi, "London Has Fallen" also stars Morgan Freeman.
