Hollywood stars are often associated with luxury cars, chauffeurs and lavish lifestyles. But long before they became one of the biggest names in the film industry, George Clooney learned how to survive with very little. That practical mindset recently led to one of the most unusual stories the Oscar-winning actor has shared, one involving a broken car, his wife Amal Clooney's stockings and an improvised repair that got them safely home.

Speaking to Esquire in 2025, the actor revealed how years of financial struggle taught him to solve problems on his own, even in unexpected situations. The actor recalled an incident when he and Amal were travelling in his vintage 1962 Chrysler and suddenly found themselves stranded after the vehicle overheated.

When George Clooney's wife Amal's stockings became a car part

According to Clooney, the breakdown happened on a cold day while the couple were out driving. Rather than panic or wait for roadside assistance, the actor relied on a trick he had learned during his younger years.

Recalling the moment, he quipped, "I said to Amal, Give me your stockings. And she took her stockings off, and I made a fan belt out of her stockings and got us home,” he says. “And she’s like, How did you do that? And I said, Because I was fucking broke for fifteen years! I didn’t have health insurance for ten years. So you’re handy? I ask him. 'I’m so handy. You have no idea.'"

Clooney said Amal was astonished by what she had just witnessed. Explaining how he knew what to do, the actor joked that years of living without money had forced him to become resourceful and find solutions with whatever was available.

A life far removed from Hollywood glamour

Today, George Clooney is one of the most successful actors in the world. However, his journey to stardom was far from easy.

In the same interview, Clooney opened up about the difficult years before his breakthrough in Hollywood. He revealed that he worked a variety of jobs to make ends meet, including cutting tobacco for a few dollars an hour and selling insurance door-to-door. At one point, he was even sleeping on a closet floor while attending acting auditions.

Those years, he explained, taught him valuable practical skills and made him comfortable handling problems on his own instead of immediately seeking professional help.

'I'm so handy. ' The car story was not the only example Clooney offered.

During the interview, he described himself as extremely handy around the house. He shared another recent incident involving an industrial coffee machine that had stopped working. Despite a warning label instructing users not to open the machine and instead contact the manufacturer, Clooney decided to investigate the problem himself. He took the machine apart, identified the issue, reassembled it and got it running again.

The actor laughed about ignoring the instructions, saying he preferred trying to fix things himself whenever possible.

Lessons learned from his mother

George Clooney also credited his resourcefulness to his upbringing. He recalled childhood memories of travelling with his mother, who had a habit of spotting discarded household items left on the roadside. Rather than seeing them as rubbish, she saw opportunities.

According to Clooney, his mother would often bring home old objects and transform them into something useful. One memory that stayed with him involved an old Singer sewing machine that she repurposed into a lamp.

Watching her find value in things others threw away helped shape his own practical approach to life.

From struggling actor to global superstar

While Clooney's repair skills may surprise many fans, they are part of a larger story of perseverance. The actor first became a household name after landing the role of Dr. Doug Ross in the hit medical drama ER in 1994. The role transformed him into a television star and opened the door to a successful film career.

Over the years, he went on to headline major films including Ocean's Eleven, Out of Sight, Syriana and The Descendants, earning multiple awards and establishing himself as one of Hollywood's most respected actors and filmmakers.

Today, George Clooney and Amal have been married for more than a decade and are raising their twins, Alexander and Ella. The couple also co-chair the Clooney Foundation for Justice, which supports victims of human rights abuses around the world.
