An employee was asked to have work email on his phone. Here's how he bypassed the unfair demand
A Gen Z’s calm and composed reply when the HR manager asked him to have work emails on his phone has gone viral. Taking to X, career coach Simon Ingari shared a hilarious anecdote about how a spunky Gen Z professional outsmarted an invasive policy that wanted to monitor employees’ emails at all times.

The situation began when HR announced that employees were expected to keep their official email accounts accessible through their smartphones. Instead of immediately agreeing, the Gen Z employee questioned whether the company would compensate workers for using their personal devices and mobile plans for professional purposes.

When HR clarified that there would be no additional payment or upgraded phone, the employee asked why constant access was necessary in the first place. The explanation was that workers should be reachable whenever needed, including beyond regular office hours.

The employee then pointed out that work emails were already accessible throughout the working day through company laptops. If the organisation expected employees to remain connected after office hours, the policy appeared to effectively extend working responsibilities into their personal time while shifting the cost of connectivity onto employees.

Ingari ended the post by praising the new generation of employees for insisting on having boundaries at the workplace and not standing up to be overworked and exploited by the management. They are questioning the earlier generation’s tendencies to prove loyalty by working overtime without pay. He then concluded that Gen Z is not entitled. They just watched the older generation get laid off after 20 years of 'loyalty' and 'commitment' and said, Yep, I am not doing that,” he wrote.
