R Madhavan’s GDN is coming to OTT
The film tells the story of Gopalaswamy Doraiswamy Naidu, popularly known as the “Edison of India”, and follows his journey from modest beginnings in Coimbatore to his work in engineering, transport, industry and innovation. Directed by Krishnakumar Ramakumar, GDN focuses not only on his inventions but also on the resistance he faced while trying to turn his ideas into reality.
GDN OTT release date and platform
Netflix has confirmed that GDN will begin streaming on September 4, 2026. The announcement was made by the streaming platform on social media, along with a poster featuring Madhavan as G.D. Naidu.Netflix India announced the release with the line, “Oru manushan oda vaazhkai indha naatu oda varalaaru.” The phrase translates to “A man's life is the history of this country.”
The digital release is not restricted to Tamil. GDN will also be available in Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada, making the film accessible to audiences across different parts of India.
What is GDN about?
The story looks at Naidu’s fascination with technology from his younger days and his determination to understand how machines worked. One of the incidents shown in the film involves a young Naidu becoming fascinated by a British officer’s motorcycle. He eventually saves money to buy one and, after getting it, takes it apart to study its mechanism.His interest in machines later develops into a much larger journey. Naidu goes on to establish a successful bus transport business, develop an indigenous electric motor and build international trade connections. He also sets up a polytechnic college with the aim of making technical education more accessible.
However, his progress comes with its own set of problems. The film also deals with opposition from powerful authorities, business rivalries and difficulties in his personal life, including his relationships with Chellammal and Ranganayaki.
R Madhavan leads the cast
Madhavan plays G.D. Naidu in the film and has also contributed to the screenplay. The cast includes Priyamani as Chellammal and Dushara Vijayan as Ranganayaki, along with Sathyaraj, Jayaram, Thambi Ramaiah, Vinay Rai, Karunakaran and Nandhu in key roles.The collaboration also follows Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, the 2022 biographical drama on aerospace scientist Nambi Narayanan.
