Taapsee Pannu’s Gandhari takes a simple but alarming question and turns it into an intense survival story: what would a mother do if her child suddenly disappeared? The Netflix action thriller follows Bani as she searches for her daughter Mishty after she is kidnapped at a railway station. But as the investigation moves deeper into the fictional town of Joypurra, Bani discovers that the case is connected to a much larger criminal network.

Gandhari is streaming on Netflix. The film premiered on September 3, 2026, and is directed by Devashish Makhija and written by Kanika Dhillon. The cast includes Taapsee Pannu as Bani, Ishwak Singh as Gokul, Chhaya Kadam as Uma Didi, Swastika Mukherjee as Churni Didi and Mita Vashisht as Jhunu Amba.

The story begins with Bani travelling with her husband Gokul and their young daughter Mishty. The family is on a train to Gomvati for a holiday when they stop at Joypurra. Mishty disappears at the station, leaving Bani and Gokul desperate to find her. Their attempts to get help from the local police prove largely unsuccessful, forcing them to investigate the disappearance themselves.


The case soon points towards Blackhole, a dangerous child trafficking network operating in Joypurra. As Bani searches for her daughter, she realises that the people around her may not be as trustworthy as they appear.

What is Blackhole and how does it operate?

Blackhole is at the centre of the mystery in Gandhari. The gang kidnaps children and uses a disturbing method to make their families believe that they are dead. The criminals obtain the bodies of other children, disfigure them and use them to create false identities for the missing children.

The operation is not limited to a few criminals hiding in the shadows. Bani gradually discovers that the network has connections across Joypurra, including people who appear to be helping her search for Mishty.

She also learns that the gang uses the local Bahurupi performers as cover. The disguises allow its members to move through crowds without immediately being recognised.

Why does Bani pretend to be blind? (spoilers ahead)

Bani's physical condition becomes an important part of her investigation. After Mishty's kidnapping, she suffers an injury that temporarily affects her vision. Although she later regains much of her eyesight, she chooses to continue pretending that she is blind.

This allows Bani to observe people without making them aware of what she can actually see. She quietly collects information while also training herself for physical confrontations with help from her former mentor Jhunu Amba.

Her past as a stunt performer also becomes important. Bani was trained by Amba when she was younger, giving her the physical skills needed to take on the criminals she encounters during her search.

One of the biggest shocks comes when Bani discovers that some of the people she believed were helping her are actually connected to Blackhole.

Uma Didi and Churni Didi are revealed to be part of the network. Churni's shelter home also becomes connected to the gang's activities. Bani further learns that her old mentor Jhunu Amba had made a deal with Blackhole.

The revelation hurts Bani because Amba has been an important figure in her life. However, Amba's decision is shown as more complicated than a simple betrayal. She had made a deal with the gang after her granddaughter was kidnapped and shared information about Bani without realising that it would eventually put Mishty in danger.

What is Gokul's secret?

The biggest twist arrives when Bani discovers the truth about her husband, Gokul. Gokul is not simply an innocent father caught up in the kidnapping. He has a history with Blackhole and was once associated with the gang. He had eventually walked away from that life and had previously helped save Bani from being trafficked.

In the present, however, Dada Bhai uses Gokul's love for Mishty against him. Gokul agrees to a deal: he can get his daughter back if he allows the other kidnapped girls to be taken away.

This puts Bani and Gokul on opposite sides. While Gokul believes saving Mishty is the only choice he can make, Bani refuses to sacrifice the other children for her daughter's safety.

Bani realises that the Blackhole gang plans to move the kidnapped children during the Chaumukhi Devi puja. Disguised as a Bahurupi, she follows the gang through a hidden passage and reaches the location where the children are being taken away.

She eventually confronts Gokul, who tries to stop her from interfering with the deal. The two fight, with Bani choosing to continue her mission rather than allow the other children to be trafficked.

Bani then comes face-to-face with Dada Bhai, the leader of Blackhole. He knows that Mishty is her greatest weakness and uses the girl to threaten her. But Bani refuses to surrender.

The final confrontation becomes a brutal fight between Bani and Dada Bhai. Despite being badly injured, she finds the strength to fight back and kills Dada Bhai. His death brings the Blackhole operation to a major turning point.

What happens to Mishty and the other children?

Bani succeeds in saving Mishty as well as the other kidnapped children. The ending therefore goes beyond a mother simply finding her daughter. At the beginning, Bani's entire mission is driven by her need to bring Mishty home. But as she discovers the scale of Blackhole's operation, her fight becomes bigger.
