The road to the corner office is often long and winding. For Punit Renjen, CEO of Deloitte Global, the journey began at Rohtak, Haryana. Renjen’s father had to eschew the opportunity of studying in the UK in the aftermath of the Partition. Punit had to content himself with attending a college in Rohtak.

Soon afterwards, he landed a Rotary Foundation Scholarship – his ticket to an MBA in the US. Perched at the front of the class, he would record lectures and listen to them twice to master the American accent. He joined the consultancy firm Touche Ross which merged with Deloitte in 1989. But for Renjen, his roots never left him.

“Being the first India-born CEO at any of the big four consultancy firms. I am very proud of my roots. The initial hardships steeled my resolve to become a perfectionist, and to keep learning."

“I don’t believe in it [lucky or significant numbers] but it’s fun. One and nine generally come up for me. They’re not linked to any event, but they’re easy to remember and you can play around a lot with them. They have a natural kind of order. Whenever someone asks me to select a number, I’ll either pick one or nine and [so far] I’ve been generally happy.”

“Seven is my lucky number. I believe it is the strongest and most spiritual of all numbers. Seven has magic in it, a power that holds belief strong. When you play a magic trick with it, you become the magician. When I founded ‘The World Peacekeepers Movement’ in 2011, it was based on seven human values of gratitude, forgiveness, love, humility, giving, patience and truth.”

“Nine – that’s my birthday. There is no magic to the number, I just like it. If I get a card where the numbers add up to nine, I love it. If not, it’s okay. So, the number has a good feel but it’s not a superstition [I follow].”

“For me, my lucky number is three. My birth date is 21 st . So 2+1 = 3. I don’t plan for things around the number but I’ve generally seen that it has been lucky for me. Our listing happened on July 6. I would have liked the date to be 3rd, but it never happened. There were things beyond our control. I never force issues like that.”
