WhatsApp is rolling out new features for group chats. Users can now use Member Tags to define their roles in different groups.
As the new year begins, WhatsApp is introducing a set of updates aimed at improving how people interact in group conversations. With group chats now central to everything from family planning and social events to work coordination and sports discussions, the platform is focusing on features that add clarity and make everyday interactions smoother.

One of the key additions is Member Tags, which allow users to label themselves differently in each group. These tags provide quick context about a person’s role in a specific conversation—someone can appear as “Anna’s Dad” in a family group and “Goalkeeper” in a football chat. The feature is designed to reduce confusion in larger groups and will roll out gradually.

WhatsApp is also expanding how users express themselves with Text Stickers. Any word can now be turned into a sticker by entering text into Sticker Search. These custom text stickers can be saved directly to sticker packs, making it easier to reuse them without having to send them in a chat first.

Another practical update improves Event Reminders within group chats. When creating an event, users can now set custom early reminders for participants. This helps ensure people remember to leave on time for in-person gatherings or join calls at the right moment, depending on the type of event.

These updates build on a growing list of group-focused features WhatsApp has introduced over the years, including large file sharing up to 2GB, HD media, screen sharing and voice chats. Together, the changes reflect WhatsApp’s continued effort to refine the group chat experience without overhauling how people already use the app.
