Pt. Shivkumar Sharma breathed soul into Yash Chopra romances.
If Yash Chopra introduced a new visual language for a quintessential Bollywood romance, it was Shivkumar Sharma along with flutist, Hariprasad Chaurasia, who gave this language rhythm and soul. While Sharma may be popular in the classical music circle for his heartfelt santoor performances, to Indians in general, the songs he composed for Yash Chopra has come to become synonymous with romance, and has been loved, sung, remixed and rediscovered by different generations.
As we mourn the maestro’s death, here’s a look back at some of his best song compositions, which will live on, for generations to come, and talk of romance. ‘Meri Bindiya’ from ‘Lamhe’ Way before Kajol danced her way into our hearts with ‘Mere Khawabon Mein’ from ‘DDLJ’, it was Sridevi with her thousands of beautiful facial expression that gave meaning to the feeling of waiting for a lover in the song, ‘meri bindiya’ from the film Lamhe. This number, despite its spunk is soulful and melodious and the composition by Sharma and Chaurasia (Shiv-Hari) only adds that pinch of passion to make this number memorable. ‘Tere Mere Honton Pe’ from ‘Chandni’
The sweetness of new love and the saccharin structure of a love song blends beautifully in this melodious number, that instantly reminds you of swiss alps, chiffon sarees, and brings to mind the whiff of old school romance. The number begins with a soulful flute prelude, and rolls smoothly with mild tabla interludes.
‘Dekha Ek Khwab’ from ‘Silsila’ This is one track that will never go out of style. Be it the unforgettable music blended with poetry, classical yet contemporary, this number is synonymous to Yash Chopra’s romance. Picturatised on the beautiful couple - Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha – in exquisite locales, Chopra did great justice to the spirit of this sound that Shivkumar Sharma, along with Chaurasia imbedded into it.
‘Jadoo Teri Nazar’ from ‘Darr’

From a Yash Chopra film of later years, this number matches the fervour and passion that Shah Rukh Khan brings on screen to play the character of an obsessed stalker. However, such is the beauty of Shiv-Hari composition, that despite depicting the rupturtous intensity of love, it never veers towards the negative that SRK’s Rahul brings on screen.

Magic does not happen in a wink, although to others it may appear so. After his first foray into Bollywood films with V. Shantaram’s ‘Jhanak Jhanak Payel Baje’ while on one hand Shivkumar Sharma was ecstatic that santoor was used for the first time in a Bollywood film, on the other, he was acutely aware of the shortcomings of the instruments. Therefore, resisting the call of commercialisation, Sharma dedicated himself to the 100 stringed instrument, trying to perfect it. He persevered day and night, sometimes on an empty stomach, and finally morphed santoor into a version that took a significant place in classical music.

As long as Sharma lived, to him creating music was no less than worshiping god. Talking about the connection between his music and god, sharma had said, “Even now I meditate before a concert. Once on stage, I surrender myself before my guru and God. I get an extra energy by doing so. They take over and play through me. I become a drashta – an onlooker. The drashta or sakshi bhaav is a spiritual practice.”
