Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte recently said that his country could join naval exercises with Japan, but repeated there would be no more war games with long-time ally, the US.

Predictably, he also vented against Washington once again, reiterating that the US treated the Philippines like 'dogs on a leash'.

Elephant in the room

House Speaker Paul Ryan was booed and heckled by Donald Trump supporters at a party unity rally in his congressional district in October, at an event that the Republican nominee had originally planned to attend. Ryan was booed when he referred to Trump’s obscene remarks about women as 'a bit of an elephant in the room' at the opening of his seven-minute speech.

Flea in the ear
Among the many things that former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan is credited for is the stability of the rupee and the special deposits scheme under the FCNR (B). Rajan, however, admitted this year that when he was the Chief Economic Advisor to the Finance Minister, he was actually opposed to the move and he sent bankers who came with the idea away with 'a flea in the ear'.

Travelling cattle class

The former minister of state for external affairs, Shashi Tharoor, ran into trouble in 2009 after he tweeted that he would travel ‘cattle class’ in solidarity with all our ‘holy cows’. Tharoor was engaging in conversation with columnist Kanchan Gupta on Twitter, who referenced Sonia Gandhi’s recent trip in the economy class.
