Living in a new country often brings surprises, but for Kristen Fischer, an American mum of four who has made India her home, those surprises turn into funny cultural observations. In a recent interview, she shared what she finds paradoxical about everyday Indian life — from sipping hot chai in the summer to the peculiar mix of being in a hurry yet never arriving on time. Her take has quickly gone viral, sparking laughs as well as debate online.

Kristen listed out several quirks she has noticed while living in India. For instance, ice water is frowned upon in winter, but hot chai is welcomed even on the hottest summer day. She further pointed out that children grow up hearing not to talk to strangers, but are later expected to marry one. She added that it's completely fine for a guy to hold hands with another guy, but holding a girl's hand is often frowned upon.

Further, she shared that kissing is looked down upon. She also pointed out how showing legs is considered scandalous for women, but showing the stomach is widely accepted as cultural. She claims her sharpest observation was about Indians’ relationship with moving abroad: many dream of settling overseas, but once there, they stick with Indian friends, shop at Indian stores, eat Indian food, and save money for trips back to India.
