This film brought Ratnam to prominence. It starred Revathi and Mohan in lead roles. The film left a huge cultural impact on Tamil cinema - it was the first time techniques such as soft focus shots, flare filters, and backlighting were used. The movie also pioneered the popular trope of a bride and groom being reluctantly married which would be replicated in other movies such as ‘Vallamai Tharayo’, ‘Raja Rani’, etc. The movie’s lead character - the happy-go-lucky yet rooted and dignified Divya would also go on to become the blueprint for other Ratnam heroines.

Decades before ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ became a global phenomenon, Prakash and Geethanjali provided the blueprint for a doomed romance between terminally ill lovers. This was the movie that catapulted Nagarjuna to superstardom. It also remains the auteur’s only Telugu movie. Just like Gulzar’s ‘Koshish’, ‘Geethanjali’ does not make the character’s disability/terminal illness the focal point (although it does play a pivotal part in the story eventually) but centres more on the budding romance between two people. Aside from the top-notch performances, and the scenic beauty of Ooty, songs such as ‘O Priya Priya’, ‘Jallanta Kavinta’ etc make ‘Geethanjali’ timeless.
