Footballer Sunil Chhetri is now a dad, welcomes baby boy with wife Sonam Bhattacharya

Sunil Chhetri, the Captain of the Indian football team has become a father!

The 39-year-old footballer welcomed his son with his wife Sonam Bhattacharya on August 31.

According to an India Today report, the baby is healthy with no noticeable deformities. There were several concerns about Bhattacharya’s pregnancy after she was diagnosed with dengue.


Earlier, Chhetri shared the news of the pregnancy with his fans after celebrating his goal in an Intercontinental Cup. He took the ball after scoring the goal against Vanatua.

"Me and my wife are expecting a baby, this is how she wanted me to announce - it’s for her and the baby. I just hope we got all the blessings and wishes,” he told the media post the match.

Chhetri got married to his long-time sweetheart Sonam, in 2017. Sonam is the daughter of the iconic footballer Subrata Bhattacharya, who was a member of the football team Mohun Bagan.

On the work front, Chhetri is on a roll. The Indian football team bagged the Intercontinental Cup in June and followed it up with more victories such as winning the SAFF Championship in July.

The ace footballer is currently on a break to celebrate fatherhood. So he will not be participating in the King’s Cup that will be held in Thailand. However, he will be back for the Asian Games Campaign.
