FN Souza's 'Fan Dancer' painting fetches Rs 1.19 cr at online auction

KOLKATA: A painting by FN Souza fetched a whopping Rs 1.19 crore ($167,750) at the AstaGuru's auction held last week while artworks by HA Gade and Paritosh Sen fetched the highest price ever for their works.

Souza's, one of India’s most distinguished modernists and a member of the Progressive Artists' Group work titled ‘Fan Dancer’, an oil on canvas from 1962 achieved the highest sales.



SH Raza’s ‘Nidhi’, an acrylic on canvas painting from 1990, which was offered for the first time in an auction achieved the second highest price of Rs 1.07 crore ($ 151,444).

Gade’s Untitled oil on canvas work of 1950, commanded a record-breaking price of Rs 48.81 lakh ($ 68,745), whereas, Sen’s House of Banaras, a rare work from the artists oeuvre from 1958, was sold at Rs 62,30 lakh ($ 87,745), the online auction house said.

The house concluded its Collectors Choice: Modern Indian Art online auction on June 26 featuring works of India’s eminent modernists including MF Hussain, SH Raza, Ganesh Pyne and Jogen Chowdhury.


The auction witnessed bidding across the collection with many international buyers participating in the online sale.
