As with everything else, there is a flavour of the season even in the literary world. A book that everyone is reading, is talking about. And then there are works that stay with you well beyond their trending span has ended. For former Microsoft India chairman Ravi Venkatesan, that book is Stephen Covey’s '7 Habits of Highly Effective People'. “It was a hugely influential book for me. In it, Covey speaks about the circle of concern and the circle of influence. You can be concerned about many things. But there isn’t much you can do about those things. What is it that you can do about things around you and make a difference,” he says. And according to him, when you do that, the circle of influence grows.

“People say, ‘She is a terrific leader. Let’s give her more responsibility’. This is what Gandhiji said, ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world’,” Venkatesan says. His advice: stop worrying about fixing other people’s problems and behaviour. Just focus on what you can fix . And the world will change remarkably around you.

“I don’t believe in it [lucky or significant numbers] but it’s fun. One and nine generally come up for me. They’re not linked to any event, but they’re easy to remember and you can play around a lot with them. They have a natural kind of order. Whenever someone asks me to select a number, I’ll either pick one or nine and [so far] I’ve been generally happy.”

“Seven is my lucky number. I believe it is the strongest and most spiritual of all numbers. Seven has magic in it, a power that holds belief strong. When you play a magic trick with it, you become the magician. When I founded ‘The World Peacekeepers Movement’ in 2011, it was based on seven human values of gratitude, forgiveness, love, humility, giving, patience and truth.”

“Nine – that’s my birthday. There is no magic to the number, I just like it. If I get a card where the numbers add up to nine, I love it. If not, it’s okay. So, the number has a good feel but it’s not a superstition [I follow].”

“For me, my lucky number is three. My birth date is 21 st . So 2+1 = 3. I don’t plan for things around the number but I’ve generally seen that it has been lucky for me. Our listing happened on July 6. I would have liked the date to be 3rd, but it never happened. There were things beyond our control. I never force issues like that.”
