Five ways to make the most of a sabbatical
Sabbaticals are getting common across industries, typically lasting for three months to a year. Employees must ensure sabbaticals do not harm their career.

1. Renew your Skills

If the employee uses sabbaticals to learn new skills and keep the manager in the loop, a post could be identified for him or her. “Sabbaticals are terrific if you want perspective. They help in exploring new avenues,” says Abhijit Bhaduri, chief learning officer, Wipro.

2. Take One at Any Age

The corporate world allows sabbaticals even if the employee has been in the job for four to five years. According to Bhaduri, many in the top brass also use this time to complete a course, write a book and come back to senior positions without a glitch.

3. Keep the Connections Intact

An employee on sabbatical must never lose touch with his or her team. A sabbatical should be taken after a discussion on goals, career path and how the employee will benefit. He or she should be aware of whether the time off will impact the appraisal so there are no grievances against the manager or organisation.

4. Discover New Opportunities

The break can be used to understand if one is suited to the job or wants to pursue another career, says Bhaduri. The security of a job will help the employee realise the trigger and make a shift if need be.

5. Keep Employers Posted

Those who have opted for a sabbatical to do volunteer work, learn a different trade or a skill should keep the employer posted on their progress. “In case of tough times, the employee is prepared,” says SM Gupta, global chief people officer, Aegis.

It is important to thoroughly analyse the current role and what it offers. "Is it a technical role, or a general management role? Understanding the role will help highlight whether one needs further specialisation or do something else," says Puja Kapoor, HR head, Dunnhumby India.

"Evaluate your current strength and weaknesses. An assessment can also help provide direction on what needs to be done next," adds TK Mandal, VP, HR at JK Paper.

It is imperative to leverage the right sources, says Kapoor. While Mandal says the mentor could even be one's spouse, Kapoor says different people could provide a range of perspectives.

"While a manager can help remove the bottlenecks and lead you to bigger roles and responsibilities in your current job, a coach can be your sounding board for your daily struggles. A mentor can help channelise your long-term vision," she says.

Setting time-based goals and targets can help keep oneself in check. "Have a vision of what you'd like to achieve in two to three years," says Mandal.

Adds Kapoor: "Keep a one-tothree-year goal of creating your own development plans, and use your sources to assess how you’re faring. It's crucial to clearly istinguish between aptitude and aspirations while framing your plans."

Once the goals and targets have been identified, it's time to look for support mechanisms — internal or external.

"Gain as much knowledge as possible about your desired functional areas, read, understand and meet people and look for mechanisms — internal or external skilling programmes that can further your plans," says Kapoor.

A change in career path will require tenacity and effort but could also come with some tradeoffs. "It could mean a pay cut or a lesser-known brand, but it helps to focus on the role and what it could lead you to achieving. One should see the big picture and long-term gains," says Mandal.

"It pays off if one is willing to take up challenging roles and assignments as that will put one on a steep learning curve," says Kapoor.
