Five ways to deal with a clueless boss

A young workforce means young bosses. Some of them are first-timers, others work in silos, while still others are promoted because business expanded quicker than imagined. Without training, these seniors have no idea about their work and how to manage a team. ET gives a few suggestions that can simplify things for those reporting to a clueless boss.

1. Give Updates

If the boss is new to the job or is used to working in silos and has been given a team for the first time, reportees should keep him or her updated on every move. “With such bosses, verbal communication does not work and one needs to exchange regular emails,” says Rituparna Chakraborty, co-founder and senior vice-president at TeamLease Services.

2. Have a Lieutenant

If the manager is unable to discharge his or her duties efficiently, and there is no imminent change in structure, the next-in-command should take over the reins. “She should motivate the team, keep a balance between both sides and communicate with the head all the time,” says Chakraborty.

3. Provide Tools

With a young workforce, many companies have very young bosses heading teams. This is the first time some have a team reporting to them. In such cases, the company should take feedback from the team and organise leadership and team management training for the boss.

4. Always Have a Plan

“A clueless boss cannot afford an unorganised team,” says Chakraborty. The team should insist on regular meetings, set quarterly goals and have a plan before every project.

5. Handle With Care

Even if the boss is clueless, he needs to be handled with kid gloves. Any disagreements should be put forward through the next-incommand, so that the boss does not feel his position is threatened and rush in to kneejerk reactions.
