Fitbit is making strides in the smartwatch segment thanks to great products such as the Ionic and Versa. But the company came into the limelight due to its fitness bands. So it is going back to roots with the Charge 3 – a successor to the Charge 2.

There are a number of improvements in the overall design of the band. The most visible one is the larger and brighter display. It is still monochrome but thanks to the new size, it can show you more content at a glance. And the text is easier to read.

The band itself is sleeker and curved to fit your wrist comfortably. There is a new, simpler way to replace the bands when you want to customise (and there are many third-party band options).

The Charge 3 is also waterproof, so you can track your swims with it. A majority of operations are handled by the touchscreen and there is a touch-sensitive button on the left for the “back” function. The new design looks great — not only it is sleeker and more comfortable but it also has a more premium look and feel.

As a fitness band, the Charge 3 does everything you would need. There is the standard steps, distance, calories and sleep tracking. Sleep stages are also tracked, along with continuous heart rate and automatic exercise recognition (15+ exercises). You can view the basic data on the band itself.

Comprehensive analysis is available on the Fitbit app. All the synced data from the band is shown in an easy-to-view format. You can also change watch faces from the app (there are eight options). The app further lets you dive into precise notification control. You can individually set which apps are allowed to show notifications on the band.

Battery life is great — we got seven days of backup from a full charge. This is with an option called All Day Sync enabled. If you choose manual sync, you can expect an additional day of battery life.

The only issue is that like the Charge 2, the Charge 3 doesn’t have GPS (it relies on a connected phone for that). Despite that, the Charge 3 should be your top choice if you are looking for the best fitness band.
