Lalit’s Taste of Kerala, Fort

One of the many Malayali eateries that dot the inner lanes of Fort, Taste of Kerala offers an extensive Malayali menu. They do a very filling but spicy meen pollichathu, a peppery, boneless fish mappaz curry and crisp prawns pepper roast. On Sundays they serve appams as well.

Pradeep Gomantak Bhojanalay, Fort

This no-frills jevanalaya is perfect for a simple, budget Konkani-Goan thali. There’s a bit of a wait during lunch, but service is quick. The selection is limited, but all of it is tasty. Try the mandeli fry, the prawns masala or the surmai rice plate.

This tiny mom-and-pop run eatery on Mahim Causeway, opposite Paradise Cinema does some delightful, homestyle Gomantak food. You have to try the plump green masala wrapped shenaniyo (mussels), the spicy tisrya masala and the bangda hooman curry. Skip the sol kadi.

Ratnagiri, Andheri (E)

Astone’s throw away from the station is this great place for fresh fish and well, cheap beer. Dive straight into the seafood selection. They do a fabulous fish thali but you should also try the kolambi bhat, tisrya masala and surmai fry.

Don’t be put off by the entrance to this eatery which is dark and dingy. The first-floor Malwani restaurant is clean and always busy. Try the crisp bombil fry, the kalwa masala or the fish koshimbir. Don’t miss out on the soft bhakris or fluffy wades.
