South Korean hip hop star Artisan Beats is no more
Artisan Beats, an influential figure credited with shaping the earliest wave of Korean hip-hop, has died suddenly at the age of 47. Hwas regarded as one of the foundational contributors to the country’s underground rap movement and earned respect for both his production skills and artistic vision.

South Korean publication Maeil Business Newspaper reported that the musician passed away on February 17. Confirmation of his death was also shared by the official social media page of Bulhandang, the collective he was associated with. In its statement, the group informed followers that their longtime producer was no more and conveyed heartfelt sympathies while offering prayers in his memory.

Music critic Kang Il-kwon also addressed the loss publicly through social media. He described Artisan Beats, who was additionally known by the alias Saatan, as one of the enduring witnesses to the rise of Korean hip-hop culture. Kang highlighted that the late musician had been one half of Da Crew and an active participant in Bulhandang. Expressing disbelief, the critic shared that although he had not met Seo Jae-min in recent years, he had assumed the producer was doing well, making the news all the more devastating. He reminisced about moments they had spent together in the past and offered prayers for his eternal peace.

As noted by Allkpop, Artisan Beats was born in 1979 and built his career as both a performer and a producer. He played a role in the collective Master Plan Allstarz and initially gravitated toward moody, intense compositions. Early in his journey, he promoted his work under the stage name Satan, a moniker that reflected the darker tone of his music. Later, distancing himself from imagery associated with that identity, he adopted the name Artisan Beats. Over the years, he continued releasing projects, including the 2014 single Jimmy Chu with Born Kim and the 2015 extended play Chun, cementing his legacy within Korea’s hip-hop scene.
