Ankur Warikoo's response to one of the emails was a powerful combination of reflection on self-worth, regret, and courage.
A heartfelt exchange between a struggling Indian biologist in Germany and entrepreneur Ankur Warikoo has gone viral, shining a light on the emotional toll of career setbacks and personal sacrifice. Neha, a biologist who moved abroad at 23 for higher studies, found herself overworked, underpaid, and constantly undervalued despite years of dedication. After extending her vacation to care for her mother during a cancer diagnosis, she was fired from a company ironically working on cancer immunotherapy. Feeling like a failure despite her relentless effort, she reached out to Warikoo, who responded with a powerful reflection on self-worth, regret, and courage that resonated with thousands online.

Neha had dreamed of becoming a leading scientist, but over the years, passion gave way to frustration. Language skills and dedication kept her competitive, yet workplaces offered little support. Harassment, underappreciation, and even physical strain became part of her daily routine. After her mother’s diagnosis in 2023, Neha extended her vacation from her own leave, only to return and lose her job. Despite 12 years in Germany, she earned far less than her peers in other fields and struggled to see progress, living almost hand-to-mouth.

In response, Warikoo asked Neha to imagine her life at 80, surrounded by loved ones. He asked her to consider what she would regret most—not the failures or mistakes, but the times she allowed fear, comparison, or external pressures to dictate her choices. He urged her to honour her hard work, recognise her own courage, and not judge herself harshly for circumstances beyond her control.

Netizens react

The exchange sparked widespread discussion on X, with netizens praising Warikoo’s approach for encouraging reflection rather than giving direct advice. Many highlighted the value of pivoting and evolving when a career path no longer fits, seeing it as a form of growth rather than failure. Some noted that while experiences abroad can vary and labor protections in Germany are strong, the story still resonated, emphasizing the importance of perspective, self-reflection, and cultural sensitivity in shaping both personal and professional decisions.
