The sinister ‘foreign hand’ has long been fixture of the country’s security establishment. The Army has added on a ‘foreign foot’.
An Indian Army team undergoing a high-altitude acclimatisation course in the upper reaches of the Himalayas has reportedly come across, and photographed, very large footprints in the snow that they said were made by the legendary yeti, the ‘Abominable Snowman’.
Even as social media greeted news of the finding with a snowstorm of scepticism, the leader of the Army team said that photographs of the 35×15-inch footprints would be submitted to ‘subject matter experts’ for ‘proper scientific evaluation’ on the expedition’s return.
An Indian Army team come across very large footprints in the snow. While the unsighted yeti remains an enigma, not a few might feel that rather than the elusive Snowman, the term ‘Abominable’ fits the litterbugs who’ve made Mount Everest the ‘world’s highest junkyard’, from which some hundreds of tonnes of expeditionary garbage has recently been removed.
In the mountaineering community, the general consensus, backed by the Edmund Hillary-led 1960s six-month search for the mysterious creature, is that the ‘yeti’ could be a Himalayan brown bear. However, in the supercharged atmosphere of the ongoing polls, the spoor of the mythical beast could well raise the emotive bogey of ‘illegal migrants’.

In the year 1870, Jules Verne wrote about the exploits of an electric powered submarine. It was described as “a long object, spindle-shaped, occasionally phosphorescent, and infinitely larger and more rapid in its movements than a whale”. In the book, Captain Nemo describes electricity as “a powerful agent, obedient, rapid, easy, which conforms to every use, and reigns supreme on board my vessel”. Around 90 years later, in 1964, the three-passenger submarine-Alvin was powered by lead-acid batteries bringing electric powered submarines into service.

Though recurring hero Jack Ryan is able to outmanoeuvre the ruling Japanese cabal, the conflict results in the death of a Japan Air pilot’s son and brother. One of the technologies mentioned in the book was a type of virtual reality that is so realistic that you can’t tell the difference between the movie and real life. “The program”, as Clarke called it, would appeal to all the senses and would allow people to be someone completely different from themselves.
