Saving is important for the Mumbai shuttler, who plans to buy a house soon.
CHIRAG SHETTY, one half of India’s best badminton doubles pair, shares how he invests his income and his plans to buy a house in Mumbai.
Court coverage is critical for a badminton player, so is financial coverage. Potential Olympian Chirag Shetty understands that. While the 22-year-old doubles world No. 16 in the BWF rankings does not watch the Budget, he certainly knows where to park his moolah.
“I know that the Indian economy is not doing so well. I am aware that inflation has risen. But as long as I am earning money, it won’t be that much of a factor [for me personally]. If I earn less, it will be an issue,” Shetty, who, along with partner Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, is in contention for a spot at the Tokyo Olympics, says.
Shetty’s father Chandrashekhar, a hotelier and seasoned stock market hand, guides his son in money matters.

“I invest a lot in stocks and mutual funds. I also invest in my dad’s business. I started earning at 18 and may earn through sport till 30-35 max [maximum]. I have a job with Indian Oil. I need to think about an alternate career for later.”

Saving is important for the Mumbai lad, who plans to buy a house soon.
“I am looking for an apartment in the suburbs. If I do well, I may consider South Mumbai.” Shetty admires the way Virat Kohli and PV Sindhu have structured their earnings.
“Kohli and Sindhu have diversified investments. It is not just in sports. Kohli owns a restaurant and a brand as well,” he said.
