'Feeling heavy? You are not broken': Neuroscientist explains why spring season will not automatically fix burnout and mental health

Seasons can boost mood?
Suzuki recently addressed this common assumption on social media, explaining that the idea of spring naturally boosting mood is widely repeated but not always accurate. Longer days and increased daylight can certainly support the brain. Exposure to more sunlight helps regulate circadian rhythms, the internal body clock that influences sleep, alertness, and energy levels. Daylight also supports the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with mood and well-being.However, Suzuki emphasised that these biological supports do not automatically override existing stress or emotional burdens. If a person is dealing with sleep debt, ongoing pressure, or unresolved emotional strain, the change in season alone cannot erase those patterns. The nervous system does not simply reset because the calendar changes.
Spring season may cause more agitation
In some cases, the shift into spring can even have the opposite effect. Suzuki explained that the increased activation that often comes with longer days and rising energy levels can amplify agitation or emotional volatility in certain individuals. Rather than feeling calm or refreshed, some people may experience heightened restlessness or mood fluctuations. She also pointed out that while environmental factors influences the brain. Emotional well-being is shaped by sleep quality, stress levels, mental health, and daily habits. Seasonal changes can support these systems, but they cannot repair them on their own. Through her Myth Menders series, Suzuki unpacked a common belief about the brain and mental health.
