It can be really devastating to see your hairline thinning whenever you peer into the mirror.

The sight of hair strands poking out of your comb every time you so much as comb your hair can be a blow to your self-esteem.

While losing your hair can be emotionally draining, it’s important to investigate why it occurs.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Ageing

Advanced age is the most common reason behind hair loss. With age, hair follicles struggle to self-renew or multiply. Which is why you end up shedding more hair and struggle to grow new ones.

Genetics

Sometimes it’s all in the genes. If you have a family history of losing hair at an early age, then chances are you would experience the same. This condition is known as androgenic alopecia. In men, it manifests in receding hairline and bald spots. In women, it leads to thinning hair along the scalp.

Hormonal Imbalance

In women, low estrogen levels (due to thyroid conditions, and menopause ) can cause hair loss. Medical conditions such as alopecia areata can also cause your hair to thin.

Medication

Medication for health conditions such as cancer, depression, and arthritis can also cause hair fall.

Hairstyles

Some complicated hairstyles such as cornrows, and pigtails can cause stress on your hair strands and cause them to grow loose. This phenomenon is known as traction alopecia.

Tips To Reduce Hair Loss

  • Be gentle with your hair. This means - don’t tug at your hair, especially when it is wet.
  • Use a wide-toothed comb.
  • Use a conditioner after you shampoo your tresses. This will reduce tangling. Remember, the more tangled your tresses are, the more hair you will lose when you attempt to detangle them.
  • You can consume biotin supplements. Also, include food items rich in biotin such as bananas, sunflower seeds, and egg yolks in your diet.
  • Get ample sleep. Lack of quality shut-eye causes more hair loss.
  • Try not to stress. Remember, the more you stress, the more hair you will lose.
  • Once a week, use a pack of castor oil, coconut oil, and jojoba extracts. Apply the pack to your hair. Wait for an hour. Wash it off with a herbal shampoo.
  • Avoid processed and oily food. A poor diet generates a protein called sebum in your scalp. This blocks your hair follicles, leading to scanty hair.
