An employee recently shared why he quit his job the day before his manager's holiday started
Fed up with a hostile work environment, a young employee decided to take control of the situation in a bold way—by quitting just before his supervisor headed off on vacation. He shared his experience on Reddit, posting in the Anti Work forum, where he opened up about the distress he faced during his brief stint at a retail job.

According to his account, he had completed only three shifts at a small store that offered minimum wages, but the experience had already become overwhelming. From the start, there was little structure or support. He had not even been provided with a proper uniform, and training was almost nonexistent. Matters escalated during his third shift, when an interaction with his manager left him emotionally shaken.

He explained that he had contacted his manager regarding an urgent issue, but the message was sent slightly outside her working hours. This led to a harsh response. The manager reportedly printed their conversation, forced him to sign a disciplinary document, and subjected him to an intense and uncomfortable confrontation. During this exchange, he felt humiliated, as his concerns were dismissed and even his university commitments were undermined.

What made the situation worse was the scheduling conflict. Despite being aware of his academic commitments, the manager continued assigning him shifts that clashed with his university timetable, later holding him responsible for the inconvenience. For someone in his first job and already dealing with anxiety and depression, the experience quickly became emotionally draining, pushing him toward a breaking point.

Although he mentioned that the assistant manager was supportive and understanding, the overall environment proved too toxic to endure. To protect his mental well-being, he made the decision to resign immediately through email and text. The timing coincided with his manager’s upcoming six-day holiday, making it unlikely that he would receive a prompt response.

Even after stepping away, he found himself struggling with guilt—particularly about leaving the assistant manager to manage the workload, including his upcoming shifts. He also worried about how the team would be informed of his resignation to avoid being perceived as absent without notice.

Many users on the platform responded by reassuring him that such guilt was misplaced, emphasizing that workplaces rarely extend the same loyalty to employees that they expect in return.
