Laya Gorty had a successful career in Telugu cinema before stepping away from acting after marriage. She moved to the US and began a new chapter outside films, using her education to enter the IT sector. She later started a dance school and continued working through different career phases. Nearly two decades after leaving the spotlight, Laya returned to the big screen with Thammudu in 2025.

Journey of Telugu actress Laya Gorty

Laya began her journey in the entertainment industry as a child artist and classical dancer before making her debut as a lead actress with the 1999 Telugu film Swayamvaram. Her natural acting style and expressive performances soon made her a familiar face in Telugu cinema.

During her first innings, Laya appeared in more than 40 films across Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. She became particularly known for playing soft and relatable characters and worked in films such as Preminchu, Manoharam and Hanuman Junction.

Her performances also earned her critical recognition. Laya won three Nandi Awards during her acting career, establishing herself as one of the prominent actresses of her generation.

However, her career took a different turn after she got married in 2006. She moved to the United States with her husband, Dr Sri Ganesh Gorty, and stepped away from the film industry. For Laya, leaving acting was a conscious decision, but adjusting to life away from the profession was not always easy.

From actress to IT professional and dance school owner

Laya had an educational background that gave her another career option. She completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Computer Applications and eventually entered the IT industry. Around 2011, she began working as an IT professional. During the conversation with ap7am, she revealed that she worked with Satyam on a project for General Electric. Her corporate career became a completely different experience from the world of films she had known earlier.

However, Laya did not remain in IT continuously. After taking a four-year break, she started a dance school in 2017. The school became successful, with students taking part in competitions and shows.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way the dance school operated. With group performances and classes becoming difficult, Laya and her students moved towards online content. They began uploading dance videos on YouTube and later explored Shorts and Reels.

Her career journey did not stop there. Laya later worked in the technology sector in the US, including an association with Joby Aviation, an American aerospace company working on electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.

Her professional life outside cinema surprised many fans, especially after pictures and videos from her workplace surfaced online.

Why did Laya leave acting?

Laya has spoken candidly about what it felt like to step away from acting while she was still at the peak of her career. Although leaving the industry was her own decision, she admitted that there were moments when she questioned her identity after becoming a homemaker.

In the same coversation, speaking about that phase, Laya explained, "It was a big change. Even though it was a decision I took consciously, at times I would think, ‘Who am I now? Just a housewife?’ No matter how financially comfortable one is, staying active, doing some work, and earning recognition in society gives a different kind of satisfaction. It’s not just about earning money—I want to stay active and busy, and create a mark among people."

Her return to cinema eventually gave her another opportunity to reconnect with acting. Laya made her comeback with Thammudu in 2025, where she played the sister of Nithiin.

The film marked her return to the big screen after nearly two decades away. Rather than treating her comeback as a one-off appearance, Laya continued exploring acting opportunities.

Her second film after returning, Sampradayini Suppini Suddapoosini, released on March 6. Laya is hopeful that the project will give her the commercial success she has been looking for in her second innings.

From winning Nandi Awards and becoming a familiar face in Telugu cinema to working in IT, running a dance school and eventually returning to films, Laya’s journey has taken several unexpected turns. Her comeback is now giving audiences a chance to see the actress on screen again after a long break.
