Extensive research over half a century indicates that the presence of low-level chronic inflammation plays an important role in cancer. It is the smouldering inflammation along with accumulation of genetic events, present for decades, which often gives rise to cancer. This timeline offers an incredible window of opportunity for the early detection of cancer, which often is associated with an excellent prognosis in this disease.
Early detection is an important factor to reduce the instance of death from cancer. This can be done through participation in public health early detection programs. It has been unequivocally established that cancer survival is better for early, localised disease than for a later stage, advanced form of the disease.

It is important to pay attention to the signals, especially the non-specific, seemingly unimportant ones like weight loss, loss of appetite, bloating, fatigue, fever, or night sweats. .. No one is immune to cancer. So when in doubt, get yourself checked.

Dr Sharmin Yaqin works in the field of cancer immuno therapy. For 14 years, she has been involved in research and development of customised treatment in cancer, called dendritic cell therapy. She is director of Optimum Therapeutics Pvt Ltd that runs Denvax Clinics in India. Currently, she works in preventing oncology, raising awareness especially in women. She lives in the UAE.
