Former Oracle Bengaluru employee and entrepreneur Pradeep Kannan recently shared an interaction with his 13-year-old daughter that completely changed the way he looked at networking and long-term thinking. Taking to X, Kannan recalled asking his daughter how she managed to know so many students across the 9th, 10th and 11th grades. Curious about her wide circle of acquaintances, he wanted to understand what motivated her to strike up conversations with so many people.
Her response, he said, immediately caught his attention. She smiled and explained that she simply "starts small conversations." Wanting to know more, Kannan asked why she made that effort.
A school election planned one year in advance
Her answer surprised him even more. His daughter explained that she wanted to participate in the school elections the following year. To prepare, she wanted people across different grades to know her, while also making an effort to know them. Rather than waiting until election season, the 13-year-old had already begun building genuine connections well in advance.Kannan reflected that while she was already planning a year ahead at the age of 13, he remembered spending that age simply trying to finish his homework.

The lesson she taught her father
The entrepreneur said the biggest takeaway from the conversation was that opportunities rarely begin when the spotlight is on you. According to Kannan, opportunities start with the conversations people have long before their "name is on the ballot." In other words, trust, familiarity and relationships are built gradually through consistent interactions rather than at the moment when they are needed. His daughter's simple approach highlighted that networking is not about collecting contacts when an opportunity appears. Instead, it is about building authentic relationships over time so that when opportunities arrive, people already know who you are.
Why the lesson goes beyond school
Whether someone is applying for a new role, launching a business or leading a team, relationships often begin long before any formal opportunity presents itself. Small conversations, thoughtful interactions and genuine curiosity can create trust that later opens unexpected doors. He ended the heartfelt post with a birthday wish, calling his daughter his "smartest teacher," acknowledging that one of the most valuable lessons he had learnt recently came not from a boardroom or business meeting, but from a thoughtful conversation with a 13-year-old.
