It will be interesting how Apple prices the device, given that the iPhone 8 is still selling online for USD 449, while the iPhone SE retails for USD 399.

Apple Inc. has notified its suppliers that assembly of a new low-cost iPhone will begin in February, reported Fortune. The company’s stock has surged in the past few months, with the iPhone 11 family of devices receiving a positive response.

With its latest product, Apple will be hoping to capture a segment of the smartphone market that it hasn’t addressed: small-size devices with high processing power, and good imaging technology. The Cupertino-based company is expected to officially launch the new phone in March.

The components will be shipped and assembled at the facilities of Hon Hai Precision Industry, Wistron Corp., and Pegatron Corp. The new model is expected to be the successor to the iPhone SE, although it will look similar to the 2017 model iPhone 8, Bloomberg reported.

It will be interesting how Apple prices the device, given that the iPhone 8 is still selling online for USD 449, while the iPhone SE retails for USD 399. The phone, dubbed the iPhone SE 2, is expected to have Touch ID incorporated into the home button, recycling Apple’s trademark circular tactile home key.

It will give a miss to in-display fingerprint technology, something that has become quite common on mid-level Android phones. It will also not have Apple’s Face ID authentication that is available on bigger siblings with notched displays. However, it will have the same processor as Apple’s flagship iPhone 11.

Buoyed by the response, Apple has asked Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., a key component manufacturer, to increase its chip output for the current quarter, a news magazine reported. Other companies which are a part of Apple’s supply chain have seen their stocks rise.

The shares of Japan Display Inc., which supply LCD panels for Apple’s cheaper iPhones, rose 1.35 per cent after the announcement last week. But Apple isn’t getting distracted by its effort to capture a new segment of the market, having planned a slew of high-end phones for release in the latter half of 2020. These devices are expected to sport new 3-D cameras on the back, 4G connectivity, and even faster microprocessors.

A more affordable product with the Apple branding could do wonders for the brand in emerging markets like India where price-conscious buyers want the latest features for cut-price deals. Apple has established itself as a premium player in such markets, and will be looking to leverage its brand to convince buyers to pay a premium for affordable iPhones, over their cheaper Android rivals.

Apple may launch two premium iPhone 11 models this year.

The internal names given to the devices are D42 that would replace iPhone XS, and D43 to replace iPhone XS Max. The experts believe the devices will be called iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max. These devices will support a stylus - Apple Pencil.

The new devices may sport an OLED display that's used in Samsung's Galaxy S10 and Note 10.

The move is likely to assist Samsung Display in a number of ways, including reducing the list of suppliers it uses to acquire materials, and buying more from a smaller supplier pool.

The iPhone 11 series may come with a triple rear camera set-up with all the three sensors placed at the back.

The premium iPhones are expected to get bigger and better batteries, equipped with reverse wireless charging. They might also feature a lightning port for audio and charging.

The upcoming phones is tipped to be available for pre-order on September 13 and in-store availability is set to start on September 20.
