Everyday essentials that can be used for self-defence
Have you ever realised that your tote with everyday items can come to your rescue, whether you're in a parking lot or a quiet street?

-Umbrellas
Umbrellas are not only useful on a rainy day or a bright sunny day to protect yourself but they can also be used to ward off an attacker. Use an open umbrella to poke the attacker with its pointed ends, while a closed one is good for a whack on the head.
-Pens
Use this everyday writing tool on the face and under the jaw line of the person. The sharp point of the pen can be aimed at the groin or on the back of his hand. Hold the pen like a knife in your closed fist with your thumb for support. Just jab it to inflict a sudden, shocking pain to throw him off guard. It is easy to overcome him once he is stunned by the attack. Similarly, you can use your nail filer as well.
-Scarf / Stoles / Dupattas
The humble scarf or dupatta can be a good weapon to restrain the attacker. Just be fast enough and ready before your attacker gets to you. Keep your hands steady and use all your might so that you can overpower him.
-Deos / Perfumes
In case you have forgotten to carry your pepper spray, a deodorant or perfume bottle can be used just the same way. Aim at his face and spray... it is sure to burn his eyes or nose and distract him.
-Keys
We all carry our house or car keys in our bag, which can be used as a weapon. Let few of the keys on the ring stick out through your fingers while you press them against your knuckles for a solid grasp. Use the keys and target your attacker's face and sensitive areas of the body. It is sure to cause him intense pain and give you enough time to escape.
-Books
Some of us have the habit of carrying a book daily in our bag. Bulky, thick hardcover books can be used to throw on your attacker, or also be used as a weapon to hit him with.
-Heavy bags / Briefcase / Laptop
If you carry a heavy bag or a briefcase to work, it can be used to injure the attacker. Since you are accustomed to using the bag every day, you will know how best to carry it efficiently at the time of attack. If it is a briefcase or a laptop, use it as a shield and with the hard surface, knock off the attacker in just one single blow.
-Water Bottles
Use your plastic water bottle to hit him on the head and while he is recovering from the attack, quickly empty the water on him. Or splash the water on his face to distract him so that you can make a quick exit.
