Metro cities might come with several opportunities, exposure and growth, pushing professionals to build their careers here. But the shift indeed comes with a fair share of challenges. Take for example, Bengaluru, the tech capital of India, which comes with a hefty price tag. Almost everything in the city, from rent to commute and even restaurant outings, can burn a hole in your pocket, leaving most newcomers wondering how they are left with so little money by the end of the month. Along similar lines, a Bengaluru-based woman has sparked a fresh wave of discussion revolving around the city’s living costs.

Bengaluru apartment’s hidden expenses

The woman Krishnanandini recently dropped a video on Instagram sharing how her life changed drastically in terms of lifestyle after she shifted from her paying guest accommodation to a shared two-bedroom, 2BHK apartment with a roommate. The total amount spent? A whopping Rs 62,150, particularly due to the hidden charges of moving into an unfurnished apartment.

According to Krishnanandini, the first major cost was the security deposit amounting to Rs 60,000, with each of them contributing Rs 30,000. Brokerage charges were Rs 6,000 each and after these initial payments, the first month’s rent came to Rs 10,500 per person. Krishnanandini added that the biggest surprise came after they moved into the apartment and realised it was completely unfurnished, lacking even basic appliances. The two opted to rent essential household items, including a refrigerator, washing machine, and water purifier. The combined rental cost stood at approximately Rs 2,500 per month.

Daily necessities added to the financial strain

In a separate Instagram entry, the Bengaluru woman revealed multiple other costs, adding to the overall bill. The roommates installed an ACT broadband connection for internet access, priced at about Rs 930 per month. To get the service started, they made an upfront payment of Rs 2,700, covering three months. Cooking arrangements like a gas connection, cylinder and stove cost them roughly Rs 4,200. Additionally, both of them spent around Rs 4,500 on groceries.

Krishnanandini further admitted that she and her roommate ended up placing around 10 to 12 orders on the quick commerce platform Zepto, alongside a few one-time purchases to make the apartment functional. Some of them were a cot for Rs 1,900 and a mattress for Rs 4,800. Adding the expenses together, the total amount came to Rs 62,150.
