According to his account, a supervisor approached him toward the end of the day in an agitated manner and bluntly stated that the current arrangement would not be acceptable moving forward. The concern revolved entirely around the door being closed. The employee noted that this brief confrontation was the only direct interaction he had with the manager that day, as the superior had reportedly been occupied in meetings throughout.
He was instructed to ensure he appeared clearly reachable at all times. This left him baffled. He questioned the purpose of even having a private office if shutting the door was frowned upon. One of the reasons he had joined this company was to escape the constant noise of an open-floor layout at his previous workplace.
The manager later explained that he had assumed the employee was absent and had begun delegating his responsibilities to others. However, the worker pointed out that he was still new to the organization and learning its processes. He emphasized that he would inform colleagues if he were not present and added that confirming his availability would require nothing more than a quick knock. Given the small office setting, he preferred closing the door to minimize distractions and maintain focus.
Frustrated by the episode, he admitted he was already reconsidering his long-term future with the firm.
Online commenters quickly weighed in. One user shared that they also struggle with noise and place a welcoming note on their closed door to signal accessibility. Another criticized such management behavior as unnecessary intimidation tactics meant to keep employees anxious rather than productive.
