Employee Quits Toxic Job with Two Weeks’ Notice, Boss Threatens Colleagues
An employee who had grown unhappy with his retail job says he gave a standard two‑weeks notice only to be met with a surprising reaction from his manager. The worker, who shared his experience on Reddit, described a workplace he called toxic and a manager who responded to his resignation in a way many online found shocking.

The resignation came after roughly two years in the job, which the employee said he never liked but stayed in because of the tough job market. Even though the company was in an at‑will employment state, he chose to give two weeks’ notice to be professional and help with the transition. Soon after telling his supervisor, however, the situation escalated.

His manager reportedly complained that the notice was not enough, insisting he should have given more warning before handing in his two weeks. According to the employee, the manager “is upset that I didn’t give ‘advanced notice’ of my two weeks’ notice,” and demanded what sounded like a month’s notice instead. When he tried to clarify, he said he told her, “It’s not a sudden notice since I’m giving two weeks and being two weeks is the advanced notice.”

Manager Blames Staff Job Loss on Resignation

As the conversation continued, the manager shifted to bring up staffing shortages. The employee said she told him that his departure would burden his coworkers because the store was already short‑staffed and that she questioned how night shifts would get covered since he did most of them. According to the former employee, she even implied worse outcomes, suggesting his leaving could lead to colleagues losing their jobs if the store lost the ability to operate properly.

He pushed back on that, saying the manager should handle scheduling and staffing. He said to her, “That should be her job as the manager to figure out staffing issues. That she should be damn glad that at least I’m giving her two weeks.”

Online Reaction

The Reddit post drew heavy engagement from others who shared similar experiences or commented on notice practices. One user said heonce gave six weeks’ notice but was asked to stay until a replacement was found, even though he was unable to do so. Another commented that the hoped the answer was simply “no” to extending the notice.

Many responses poked fun at the idea of notice periods, with one joke being, “My two weeks’ notice is that in two weeks you’re going to notice that I’ve been gone for two weeks.” Others noted differences in labour practices between countries, saying that in places like the UK notice requirements are written into contracts and employers must provide equivalent time when terminating employees.
