About Emergency

Emergency is a historical biographical drama centered on the Emergency period imposed in India from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, under the leadership of the country's first female Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. Kangana Ranaut not only plays the lead role of Indira Gandhi but also directed and produced the film. The movie features an ensemble cast, including Anupam Kher, Vishak Nair, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, the late Satish Kaushik, and Bhumika Chawla.

The film was produced under Manikarnika Films and Zee Studios with an estimated budget of Rs 60 crore. Despite high expectations and considerable buzz before its release, the film underperformed at the box office. Emergency collected around Rs 18.35 crore in India after 24 days, while its worldwide earnings stood at Rs 23.75 crore.

Emergency’s Box Office Performance

Released in theaters on January 17, 2025, Emergency faced a direct box office clash with Azaad. The film opened with Rs 3.11 crore on its first day and saw a first-weekend total of Rs 12.26 crore. However, it struggled to maintain momentum and closed its theatrical run at approximately Rs 20.48 crore, marking it as a commercial failure.

Despite its box office disappointment, Netflix reportedly acquired the film’s digital rights for a hefty Rs 80 crore. The streaming platform expects Emergency to generate strong viewership, competing against other Bollywood releases such as Nadaaniyan, Fateh, and Azaad on Netflix.

Though Emergency failed to make a mark in theaters, its OTT release gives it a second chance to connect with audiences.
