Namita Thapar believes most people experience a meditation phobia.
I’ll be a tigress in the boardroom but if you ask me to meditate, I’ll quit, says the Emcure Pharmaceuticals ED.
A new year signifies a fresh start for many people. For some, this could mean setting health goals, such as losing weight, starting an exercise routine or cutting sugar from their diet. For others, it could be setting financial goals such as clearing student loans or starting a retirement fund.
For Namita Thapar, executive director, Emcure Pharmaceuticals, the goal is mastering meditation, more specifically, the ability to sit quietly and do nothing.
The Struggle to Stay Still “I think meditation is especially difficult for Type-A personalities and for people who are just high energy and running around (all the time),” she told ET Panache. “To really sit quietly and center yourself and not do anything and to only focus on your breathing sounds so incredibly difficult for somebody like me. Like I’ll be a tigress in the boardroom but if you ask me to meditate, I’ll quit and say: I can’t do this.”
Thapar believes most people experience a meditation phobia. “For people like us who are always on the go, full of hyper-energy, it (the concept of sitting still and doing nothing) sounds so daunting. If I can conquer that, I think that would be a great achievement.”

As daunting as the prospect is, the mother of two is hopeful she can achieve it.
“For the longest time, I thought I wasn’t capable of yoga but now I love it. So I have hope that someday I shall be able to meditate as well.”

“We have a lot of family visiting us this year. So, we’ll bring in the New Year at home. Also, our newest family member — five-month-old Yoda, our dog — is really young. We didn’t want to plan anything elaborate as he is still getting used to the house and getting trained. Post New Year’s though, we may head out to Alibaug for a couple of days.”

“I’m not very sure where I will be; I could be in New York, I could be in India. I don’t really plan New Year’s because most of the time I end up working. It’s peak season for us. If I could, I’d be happiest sitting at home and watching TV. So, I probably would have an early dinner and then just settle in with a television series, some popcorn and a soft drink.”

“For me, the holidays is time to spend with friends and family. Starting a new year in the company of those I love is what matters most to me and the destination is usually secondary. This year, I am going to London to bring in the New Year. I plan on enjoying the city and stealing moments to unwind and catch up with family and friends.”

“It’s up in the air. It could be Goa or somewhere in London. We did London last year and many, many years of Goa. On some odd years, we were stuck in Mumbai, which is also fun because you can throw an impromptu party but the traffic will be insane. For New Year’s, I love to have lots of people around. There are enough times in the year when you can just be quiet and alone but for New Year’s you want to be surrounded by lots of people and have a blast.”

“I will be in Manhattan this time with our two-year-old. I love the energy of the place. Times Square is a place I visit often. This has been on my wish list for some time, but my wife and I were just waiting for the baby to be old enough to get some sense of it.”
