Elon Musk vs Sam Altman: After OpenAI CEO questions people's RAM usage at home, Musk defends ordinary users with a meme

Elon Musk and Sam Altman

As artificial intelligence companies race to build bigger data centres, the growing demand for memory chips has started to become a problem for ordinary computer users. RAM prices are rising, manufacturers are struggling to meet demand, and consumers are facing higher costs when buying PCs and other electronic devices. Amid this shortage, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has questioned whether people should keep large amounts of memory in their personal computers when it could be put to better use in AI data centres. This comment had made Elon Musk come out in defence of consumers.

Sam Altman on people keeping RAM in PCs

The controversy began after Altman on the Cheeky Pint podcast, hosted by Stripe co-founder John Collison discussed the growing interest in running AI models locally on personal computers instead of depending on cloud-based services.

Altman questioned whether this approach made sense when the world was already facing a shortage of memory chips. He argued that a significant amount of RAM installed in personal computers remained unused for much of the day.

“From a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5 per cent of the time,” he said.

He added, “You want maximum utilisation in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment.”

His argument was that cloud data centres could make more efficient use of available memory by serving multiple users, rather than having computing resources sit idle in individual devices.

Elon Musk responds with a meme

Altman's comments led to criticism from people who felt that consumers should not be expected to give up computing resources simply because AI companies need more memory.

Musk joined in by sharing a meme based on the opening interrogation scene from the film Inglourious Basterds. It showed an officer asking, “You are withholding DRAM from the cloud, are you not?”

Alongside the meme shared on X, Musk wrote, “The people deserve to have their RAM too!”

Other X users also joined in, with one joking about using 64GB of RAM to play RollerCoaster Tycoon. The user added that Altman should know who was using the memory, prompting Musk to respond with a laughing emoji.

Why are RAM prices rising?

All of this comes amid a global memory shortage due to AI data centres. Manufacturers are have directed its production towards high-bandwidth memory and other products needed by large AI infrastructure operators, putting pressure on supplies available for consumer electronics.

The impact is already being felt across the industry, with higher memory costs leading to price increases for smartphones, laptops, PCs and gaming consoles. Industry forecasts suggest that supply constraints could continue into 2027.

Interestingly, Altman also acknowledged the market's difficulties during the podcast, saying that “the invisible hand is failing right now.”

Elon Musk and Sams Altman history of disagreements

The exchange is the latest public clash between the two technology leaders, who were once business partners. Musk and Altman co-founded OpenAI in 2015 as a non-profit AI research organisation.

Musk eventually left the company following disagreements over its leadership, funding and future direction. He has since repeatedly accused OpenAI of abandoning its original mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity.
