Eight tips for a great bromance

American president Barack Obama is in the last year of his presidency. Apart from the landmark nature of his election and the sweeping legacy he leaves behind, his tenure will be remembered for the great bromances between him and his veep Joe Biden.

Every man has that one special friend who knows about all his heartaches and drunken adventures. Your pal's importance in your life ranks somewhere between mother and wife but it's not like him to ask because frankly, you both "already know" how special the other is. Here are some signs of a great bromance:

-Textual overtone: Look at the text messages on your phone. If your buddy's name is one of the top messages, he's your go-to guy when it comes to updates from your day-to-day life. Both of you have exchanged even more messages than all the ladies on your list combined.

-Inside jokes: You guys are a laugh a minute — getting each other's jokes without any explanations. But, introduce a third party and they are lost trying to catch up with your rhythm and what's the point anyway? They wouldn't get it.

-Dial up: In the age of mobile phones, everyone has forgotten the good old days when you had to remember a number. But you know each other's numbers by heart. This comes in handy when you need to send an SOS and your phone has died.

-Better half: People are so used to seeing you guys together that when one is missing, eyebrows are raised and everyone's concerned about that person's whereabouts.

-Too much touching: You're not a hugger. If anything, your girlfriends have complained about your lack of PDA. But when it comes to your buddy, it's all about the hugs, fist bumps, secret handshakes (if you listen carefully, you can hear all your ex-girlfriends groan) and possibly, even a coordinated dance. You're not a touchy -feely person at heart but when he's around, you like to be close.

-Good side: Your best buddy is on your good side and you're on his and you both want to keep it that way. Why? Because he has so much dirt on you that he could ruin your career and life with one single phone call. And vice-versa. This is the mark of a long-lasting friendship.

-Annual day: You two have a silly tradition. Whether it's an early morning run on your birthday or wearing matching ties for public holidays, it's important to both of you. Sure everyone may laugh but that's just their jealousy talking.

-Twice as nice: When your best buddy is around, everything becomes more bearable. From reluctant exercising to boring diets and dinners, if you've got your friend by your side, you can conquer it all. And enjoy a laugh or two along the way.
