Sandeep Gonsalves believes that even prior to the pandemic, formal wear was undergoing a change.
Sandeep Gonsalves, co-founder at Sarah & Sandeep, has been getting requests to create oversized and wrinkle-resistant jackets that can be used daily at home. “The priority for them is to invest in a singular presentable outfit that they can wear anytime they are on a business-related video call,” says the designer.

Gonsalves believes that even prior to the pandemic, formal wear was undergoing a change. “Formal business attire is declining in popularity amongst young professionals and suiting is mainly for ceremonial occasions in the Indian marketplace,” he says. “If the pandemic hadn’t struck, athleisure could have been on the rise instead of comfort clothing. You never know which direction the market is going to evolve in, and it is best to be flexible.”

A similar trend can be observed during virtual weddings and festivals, even though such occasions have been relatively low-key of late. “Several clients have been purchasing our minimal bandhgalas and sherwanis styles, instead of heavily-embellished ensembles. It’s not only cost effective for them but it’s also comfortable for more intimate gatherings that are then live-streamed.”
